There are other options out there...

Will technology save us? It's a good question and quite complex. I think that technology is very promising because we have come so far. Computers, the Internet, iPods...what would we be doing without them? We can make things so efficient through the use of technology and we pride ourselves on cutting corners. As with all things, there is the good and there is the bad.

We are able to build faster computers and faster cars, perhaps to feed our thirst for high-tech gadgets and gizmos, but I think the environment is a different story. We think that technology is the cure all, end all, when it actually is a major player in environmental degradation. Having better technology may lead to reduced pollution, but how long will it take to reverse the effects of the pollution that already exists? I commend the people who look for technological loopholes and solutions to get us out of the mess that we are in, but it might be more worthwhile to look at the other two aspects of the I=PAT equation. Doesn't the increase in consumption and therefore affluence, lead us to an increase in technology?

The environment is different than a robot. I'm not sure we can necessarily control what is going to happen with the environment through the use of technology. Mother nature will do what she wants to do or rather what we have provoked her to do. We may be able to mitigate some of the negative outcomes, but the consequences of our environmental actions, or lack thereof, are here to stay. Again, maybe we should focus on the Population and Affluence portion of the equation. We might be better off in the long run and I don't think it's wise to completely rely on one alternative out there. I've always been a believer than in any storm, we "pray for the best and prepare for the worst." I think we need to prepare for anything that can happen, which is why I think we can't rely on technology to erase all of our problems. We live in a world with so many choices...why should we limit ourselves when it comes to something so important like the state of the planet, our home, our one and only.
